This house had been previously extended with a two storey rear extension containing a kitchen at ground floor level. The kitchen was somewhat disconnected from the rest of the house and from the rear garden.

Response

We reduced the kitchen floor level and opened-up the space into a new single storey rear extension lit by four large rooflights. The style was inspired by early 20th Century design and incorporated parquet-style herringbone flooring, Crittall-style windows and doors, copper-coloured details and rainwater goods and a bold angled soffit.

At first floor level we created a galleried play space in one of the children’s bedrooms.

Our client purchased this dwelling to become their ‘forever’ home. A full refurbishment was required.

Response

At the front of the property we designed a new free-standing timber-clad garden structure with a sedum roof containing garden/bicycle storage and a home office. The existing ‘boxy’ front porch was retained but remodelled and the new porch roof was extended to provide a sheltered seating area overlooking the sunny front garden. We removed a rear conservatory and replaced this with a new kitchen/dining/living room with spectacular views of the North Downs. The existing loft bedroom was enlarged with a new metal-roofed dormer and an en-suite shower room was added. The family bathroom was completely refitted.

Our client has a beautiful south-facing garden (and green fingers). At one end of the house the previous living room provided only limited views of, and connection to, the existing patio and garden beyond. The rear elevation of the house was long and lacked interest.

Response

Our L- shaped rear extension projects less than one metre in each direction. Uninterrupted views of the garden are provided by frameless glass junctions and two-way sliding doors without corner post. The first floor is supported by a circular oak post. Untreated oak cladding, pergola and fascias provide warmth and interest to the rear elevation. To provide space for an outside table and chairs a ‘bump’ was introduced into the existing low garden wall to the patio edge. The new garden room is now our clients’ favourite space.

Our client had a long south-facing garden but this sloped steeply upwards immediately behind the house. No garden area was directly accessible from the ground floor rear of the property.

Response

We formed terraces at two levels connected by an external circular staircase. We enlarged the kitchen and provided a new garden room with glazed doors leading to the lower terrace and framed views of the upper terrace and garden beyond. A downstairs shower room and remodelled front entrance completed the design.

This tall, narrow, three-storey semi-detached house required a new kitchen and enlarged living area at lower ground floor level.

Response

We proposed a simple full-width single-storey rear extension with a green roof incorporating roof-lights. To increase the visual connection between the kitchen and living rooms the ends of the walls containing the retained staircase were cut back and replaced with a glass balustrade. The existing bathroom was refurbished and a new bicycle store created.

This substantial house had previously been extended to provide an integral garage and kitchen/utility room in a single storey extension. Our client required an enlarged kitchen/breakfast area with good connection to the rear garden and a new family bathroom, master bedroom and en-suite/dressing room at first floor level.

Response

We proposed the entire removal of the original flat/pitched roof over the previous single storey extension and its replacement with a new first floor/roof arrangement. The new volume created was designed to ensure the enlarged house presented a visually coherent whole. The existing open entrance porch was extended to form an attractive verandah which further bonds the new and existing parts together. The large master bedroom features a ‘vaulted’ ceiling with rooflights.

Testimonial

“Looking for an Architect to design a major extension and remodeling of our 1930’s Arts & Craft influenced home, we knew this was a once in a lifetime project for us so we invited a number of Architects to meet us and talk through their experience and approach. Simon immediately impressed us; he listened carefully to what we thought were our ideas and then carefully and sensitively invited us to think differently, suggesting ideas we had never considered. This was just what we needed; someone to challenge us and offer clarity of thought and a degree of subtlety that stood him out from others. The result is amazing; everyone who visits us comments on how clever the ideas are and how well the design blends the period and suits the environment. It was the small things that made the difference. We have no reservation in recommending Simon to others, we have been delighted with what he did for us”. Kevin & Sue Sparks

Our client required additional kitchen, dining and bedroom accommodation and external modernisation of this 1960s detached house.

Response

Although our client had been previously advised this was not possible, our careful design permitted the construction of a new bedroom on top of the existing garage thus saving considerable cost. A modern single storey rear extension provided an enlarged kitchen and new dining area well connected to the garden space via corner external doors. Externally, new white painted render and panels of natural timber boarding to both new and existing parts provides visual coherence to the whole.

Testimonial

“We wanted to extend our 1950’s house by adding a fourth bedroom, a playroom and a kitchen extension. Simon quickly understood the style we were looking for and came up with many suggestions around the core theme. During all parts of the engagement Simon suggested innovative solutions and challenged our thoughts in a non-intrusive manner with the result that our house has been turned into a wonderful contemporary property. The proportions of all the extended rooms are generous and simple added features such as a pillar-less corner door arrangement in the kitchen has ensured that the house has the wow factor we were after. Simon is a very engaging and competent architect and if we were to undertake another project we would use his services again”. Penny & Paul Street

This Arts and Crafts semi-detached house was compromised by a family bathroom crudely formed from part of the master bedroom and a tiny rear bedroom.

Response

On this tight site we designed a two-storey side extension in a complimentary style. The new extension contained a new family bathroom and enlarged rear bedroom at first floor level and new wc, utility room, office and side entrance at ground floor. Internal alterations created an enlarged kitchen/dining room

Our client required a new living space with good connection to the lower rear garden and additional bedroom and bathroom accommodation at first floor.

Response

We designed a light, modern two storey rear extension behind the original cottage building. The split level ground floor arrangement provides additional ceiling height to the new living space and helps to address the level change to the rear garden.

Our client required a larger kitchen and additional living space in their 1960’s detached dwelling.

Response

In a simple full-width single-storey rear extension we provided a large open-plan kitchen/breakfast/living area. A new utility room and ground floor wc/shower room were created within the existing building.
