This characterful house had a generous entrance and parking courtyard, but access to the courtyard was via a narrow drive squeezed between two neighbouring properties and a boundary wall.

Response

We proposed a new vehicular entry point directly off the highway on the opposite side of the courtyard. The courtyard itself was completely re-planned incorporating a new garage block and attractive planting areas.

Our client purchased this dwelling to become their ‘forever’ home. A full refurbishment was required.

Response

At the front of the property we designed a new free-standing timber-clad garden structure with a sedum roof containing garden/bicycle storage and a home office. The existing ‘boxy’ front porch was retained but remodelled and the new porch roof was extended to provide a sheltered seating area overlooking the sunny front garden. We removed a rear conservatory and replaced this with a new kitchen/dining/living room with spectacular views of the North Downs. The existing loft bedroom was enlarged with a new metal-roofed dormer and an en-suite shower room was added. The family bathroom was completely refitted.

Our client had a long south-facing garden but this sloped steeply upwards immediately behind the house. No garden area was directly accessible from the ground floor rear of the property.

Response

We formed terraces at two levels connected by an external circular staircase. We enlarged the kitchen and provided a new garden room with glazed doors leading to the lower terrace and framed views of the upper terrace and garden beyond. A downstairs shower room and remodelled front entrance completed the design.

Brief

This large Victorian semi-detached house had a small kitchen/dining room located in an original two storey rear extension. An underused north-facing strip of garden ran between this and a garden wall shared with the neighbour.

Response

We designed a side/rear extension providing a large kitchen/dining room with an eight metre wide bi-fold door arrangement. The angled plan form turns the rear elevation into the afternoon sun, creates a triangular external courtyard area and minimises the effect of the extension on the attached neighbour.

Testimonial

“We had put off building our extension for some years partly because of the anticipated challenges and upheavals that it would entail. I am pleased to say we have been delighted with both the outcome and the experience of working with Simon.

We had a rough idea of what we wanted but were not fixed in how this should be built. We found Simon an excellent architect to work with in this respect and enjoyed sitting down at the kitchen table with him and pen and paper and talking through different ideas. His final suggestion for the design, which exploited some flexibility in the planning rules, was inspired.

We were also pleasantly surprised by the hassle free nature of the build. Simon managed all interaction with the builders including dealing with the inevitable things that go wrong. I was relieved to leave this to a specialist who we could trust to be on our side. The resulting extension has been a very great pleasure to live in and is much commented on by visitors to the house.”

Our client required additional space for dining.

Response

This building sits in a Conservation Area. The semi-circular plan form of the new dining area effectively links the existing kitchen and living rooms whilst allowing the smallish garden to flow around the sides of the extension. The tall glazing, minimal structure and low window cills combine to give the impression of sitting in the garden. The design incorporates a built-in seat for dining and is finished with a zinc roof.

TESTIMONIAL

“It was great working with Reigate Architects on our rear ground floor extension. We had our own ideas and desires which they realised within the practical and financial limitations every project has. The process was precisely managed and the relationship with our preferred builders encouraged a positive and efficient work ethic completing on time and on budget. Our new space has completely transformed how we use the whole house and we are grateful to their expertise.”

Our client required a new kitchen/dining/living space and additional bedroom accommodation.

Response

In a ‘Russian-Doll’ form we designed a modern rear extension arranged over three levels finished in render with a zinc roof. At lower ground floor level a full-width rear extension provides new kitchen/dining/living space with good connection to the garden. At first floor level a similar, smaller, extension provides space for a relocated family bathroom- thus freeing-up additional bedroom space in the host dwelling. At second floor level a still smaller dormer extension provides additional headroom and light to the existing staircase and attractive views to the North Downs.
